Dane County Farmers' And Artists' Market

"Sun Up To Sun Down"

My wife and I have been vendors at the Dane County Farmers' Market for seven years with our business The Bookish Life.  I always look forward to this every year. We meet a lot of wonderful people and enjoy all the great food and atmosphere of downtown Madison.

This April 16th will be the first market of the year and as I was feeling inspired by the new market year I painted this piece.  Right now I have them as 3" buttons and magnets but plant to make some prints soon.  If you're in town, stop by and say hello!  We're on State Street right in front of Teddywedgers.

Wisco!

This is Wisco, my mascot for the blog.  He's also going to be my rating system for the blog.  Two Wiscos being the highest rating (like two thumbs up) and no Wiscos being the lowest.  You get the idea.

Broadway Diner

On a whim last Sunday my family and I decided to eat at a diner.  I was researching online the night before and came across this place, the Broadway Diner in Baraboo, WI.
I love these old diner cars from the 30s-50s.  The Broadway was built in 1954.  The shiny chrome, the pre-fab design sensibilities and teal color, what's not to love! I'll take a diner over a fine dining restaurant any day of the week.

But don't let the nostalgia trip fool you, this place has great food.  I had the corned beef hash which was probably the best I've had anywhere.  The chunks of corned beef brisket were big and juicy along with well seasoned potatoes, caramelized onions completed by two perfect sunny-side-up eggs!

My wife had the Harvest Hash which consisted of grilled potatoes, onions, red bell peppers and spinach.  I had a couple of bites and it was great.

My son had a hamburger and my daughter had a grilled cheese sandwich.  They both enjoyed their food as well.

Average entree cost was between $8 - $10 and for kids it was between $4 - $6.  Service was friendly , attentive (I don't think I ever had an empty coffee cup) and quick, and the diner was clean. A great place over all and well worth the one hour drive from my house.  Baraboo, WI is a nice town to visit with plenty of things to see and do.  I plan a return visit soon!

** Update - I decided to give the first "Wisco Rating"

The W-Files

With the X-Files premier just less than two hours away I was trying to get amped up for some paranormal action.  The book "The W-Files" by Jay Rath is a fun read with some really great information on several unique paranormal occurrences in Wisconsin.

I live very close to many of these sights so that makes it all the more interesting.  Belleville is the self proclaimed UFO Capitol due to several sightings back in 1987.  It's  about a twenty minute drive from me so I try to keep my eyes on the skies.  They have a fun UFO themed parade around Halloween weekend.  There's also some information on the Wisconsin Bigfoot/Werewolf "The Beast Of Bray Road" and many others.  If you are interested in this sort of thing or just plain like books on Wisconsin this would be a good one to add to your collection. I'm mostly a skeptic but I still find ghosts and aliens fascinating!

Introductions

I've lived in Wisconsin for more than half of my life.  I moved here to go to college, I met my wife here and both of my kids were born and have lived here for their entire lives.  So I guess after 23 of residency that pretty much makes me a "Wisconsinite" or "Sconnie" as some people say.

I haven't always appreciated where I lived and as a young 20 something I was continuously plotting on how to get out of Wisconsin and move to warmer climates.  But now as a husband, father and artist I've grown to really enjoy what Wisconsin has to offer.  How could you not love the wildlife and natural beauty of the Driftless Area?  Or the North Woods?  Or the quirky fun that Madison has to offer?

I've found that the more I take time look around and enjoy the area around me, the more I'm happy to call Wisconsin my home.

This blog is just going to be my salute to Wisconsin and is meant to highlight places and things to do both on and off the beaten path.
